The KU football team is finally beginning to play like the reigning PSAC champions that they are.
The Golden Bears (3-3, 1-2) gained 401 total offensive yards and scored 56 points while holding a dismal Cheyney University (1-5, 0-3) offense to seven points and 59 total passing yards for their first PSAC win of the 2012 season.
Wide receiver Brett Fox had a season-high 115 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown catches came on the Golden Bears first two consecutive drives. The second was a 68-yard connection from Kevin Morton to put KU up 14-0 in the first quarter.
Morton had an almost flawless game, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. This was his first game in the past four weeks without an interception. Morton is ranked third in passing yards (1,472) and second in passing touchdowns (20) in the PSAC this season.
The Golden Bears were able to run the ball very effectively and distributed rushing attempts between a number of players. Sophomore Adrian Sterling led the team rushing for 87 net yards on eight carries with a touchdown. These were his first rushing attempts since week one against Saint Anselm.
Running back Curtis Wortham had two rushing touchdowns, his third straight week with a touchdown run. He leads the team in rushing attempts (71) yards (413) and rushing touchdowns (6).
Versatile return-man and running back Josh Mastromotto totaled 15 yards on the ground, but also had four catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. He is averaging 173 all-purpose yards per game, leading the team.
KU’s offense went on a scoring rampage out of the gates and headed into halftime leading Cheyney 35-0. They added 21 more points in the third quarter, highlighted by a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jeremy Tucker. The Golden Bears had a commanding lead of 56-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Cheyney managed to score a touchdown on a one-yard rush by Jay Journigan with less than four minutes in the game.
The defense of the Golden Bears was able to stymie Cheyney, holding them to 208 total offensive yards, with 149 of them coming on the ground.
Zach Greenwald lead the team in tackles with eight in the game, earning him athlete of the week on the KU Bears athletic website. Jason Ulmer and Adam Goeringer each added six tackles, including a tackle for loss. Nate Falko had his first sack of the season for a loss of nine yards.
The Golden Bears look to keep their winning streak alive in their next PSAC East game against Shippensburg University. The crowd should be booming at University Field with the excitement of homecoming looming in the air. KU faces the Red Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1:05 p.m.
