Chiefs capture more than just another Super Bowl
By Mitchell Smedley
The Kansas City Chiefs were victorious over the San Fransisco Forty-Niners in Super Bowl LVIII, giving them their third ring in the last five years. In that time, the Chiefs have also appeared in another Super Bowl, losing to Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The only year Kansas City did not appear on the biggest stage in sports, they got quite close, losing a close game to the Bengals in the AFC Championship game. It has seemed in recent years that as long as quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid are at the helm, Chiefs Kingdom is unstoppable. This constant success is almost unprecedented in modern sports.
The obvious comparison to the Mahomes–Reid dominance is the Brady–Belichick administration in New England. The Patriots dominated football for the better part of two decades, winning six Super Bowls, nine AFC titles, and a whopping 17 division titles. Though the Chiefs haven’t had the prolonged dominance of the Patriots, it appears a lasting dynasty is inevitable.
Getting to the AFC Championship six years in a row doesn’t simply happen. The resume of a dynasty is already etched in stone. Going forward, the wheels are in motion for sustained Chiefs supremacy over their division, conference, and the league.
Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback and simply the best player in the league. He is paired with a coach in Andy Reid who is on Belichick’s level in full resume and is currently coaching at a higher level.
Kansas City has also shown they are not a one trick pony. They parted ways with one of the best receivers in the NFL, Tyrek Hill, and pivoted to build the league’s best defense led by Chris Jones. Along with veteran forces, KC has also shown they can draft well even with late round picks such as Isaiah Pacheco and Richy Rice. They’ve won championships thanks to their quarterback, defense, receivers, and of course their all-pro tight end, Travis Kelse.
A well run, well coached organization that has already gotten the quarterback right is simply going to succeed for a long time. They already have half the Super Bowl trophies as the Patriot’s dynasty and show no signs of slowing down. They’ve come back from down ten points in all three of their Super Bowls, scheming and adjusting their way to pure dominance.
While they appear more likable than many of those Patriots teams which so much of the country despised, fans are beginning to get Chiefs fatigue. After begging for the downfall of New England, they aren’t happy with a new primary rising to the top. Expect those haters to keep hating because the Chiefs dynasty is here to stay.
