KU students connect with Greek organizations

Recruitment is ongoing

Greek Life has kicked off the fall semester with its ‘Welcome Back Bash’ on Tuesday, Aug. 25, allowing new and returning students to visit the variety of sororities and fraternities here at KU. 

Over ten chapters attended the event, setting up their tables with information pamphlets, goodies and merchandise to advertise their fraternity or sorority. 

The DMZ was filled with students interested in Greek Life, as well as current members, who showed them what their future could look like by signing up for recruitment. This special night allowed potential new members to gain insight into Greek Life and get excited for recruitment. 

“Have fun, eat good and don’t stress it,” said Bri Gasper, member of Zeta Tau Alpha, when asked what advice she would give girls going out for recruitment. Gasper mentioned that she originally had no interest in Greek Life until she “saw [her] friends joining and having fun by getting involved outside of campus and building close-knit friendships.”

Members of Theta Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi agreed that Greek Life offers a variety of professional advancement opportunities through the alumni community. 

“People often overlook the professional aspects you can get because there are a lot of business mindsets involved with [Greek Life],” said Melanie Bloodwell, member of Theta Phi Alpha.

Greek Life often promotes the concept of a “brotherhood” or “sisterhood,” but the Welcome Back Bash made sure to highlight the philanthropies unique to each chapter. Topics of conversation across the DMZ ranged from breast cancer awareness to support for hunger and homelessness. 

Students certainly got a feel for Greek Life and all it has to offer. The DMZ was full of excitement, interest and buzz as conversation flowed and the beginning of lifelong friendships formed.
