Theme: “Rooted in Resilience”
By Marie Shane
On Oct. 16, Allies of KU hosted its annual PrideFest celebration in the McFarland Student Union Building, Room 218, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme was “Rooted in Resilience.”
PrideFest highlighted the LGBTQ+ community and provided students with a space to form friendships. The festival was open to all students and included activities such as airbrush tattoos, face painting, friendship bracelet making, stuff-a-plush and music.
When entering the event, students could sign their names on a banner to pledge to help overcome the adversity and systemic oppression the community faces.
“It’s important to raise awareness for LGBTQ+ and is a chance to have a good time, especially during this stressful time of year,” student Lisbeth Mora said.
Booths were stationed around the event featuring representatives from the LGBTQ+ Center, Planned Parenthood, Safe Berks and Bradbury-Sullivan.
“We never have an event where all of these organizations come together, so it’s somewhere we can access them,” student Mariana Grijalva said.
