On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Pen 2 Paper and the KU Black Student Union (BSU) hosted “Verses and Vibes,” an open mic night welcoming students to share poetry, music, and spoken word. Held in the McFarland Student Union (MSU) Bears Den during KU’s Black Lives Matter Week of Action, the event offered a creative space for connection across clubs and majors.
Students performed original poems and songs that explored powerful themes, ranging from colorism to identity. The room buzzed with support and vulnerability as each performance added to an atmosphere of solidarity.

Midway through the evening, an intermission invited students to gather informally, sharing personal stories, reflections, and experiences with one another. Conversations ranged from creative inspiration to lived experiences of navigating identity.
Light snacks were available for all attendees, whether they performed or simply stopped by to listen. Students lingered well after performances ended, exchanging encouragement and building new connections.
Pen 2 Paper and BSU promoted the event on social media, inviting all KU students to attend, perform, or simply enjoy the performances. Students interested in learning more about future programs can visit Engage for updates.
