Film explores consumerism and its environmental impacts

KU’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is sponsoring a screening of “The Shitthropocene,” followed by a Q&A with PRSSA member Lismeylin Feliz Medrano.
The event will take place Thursday, March 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Rickenbach Learning Center, Auditorium 135. Food and drinks will be provided.
Directed by David Garret Byars, distributed by ROCO Films and released by Patagonia in 2024, “The Shitthropocene” is a documentary that explores the deeper meaning of consumerism and its environmental impacts.
Feliz Medrano is an honors student and dual major studying public relations and Spanish at KU. The screening and Q&A are part of her honors capstone project, which examines the impact of fast fashion on women, including the women employed in the factories that manufacture the products and the women to whom those products are marketed.
“I want to spread awareness and be the voice for the 80% of women working as garment workers experiencing unjust working conditions,” Feliz Medrano said.
Thorough research provided the framework for her project, “Between Her and Me I Choose Us: Using Public Relations to Mitigate the Harms of Fast Fashion.” Partnering with PRSSA, Feliz Medrano will show “The Shitthropocene” to bring attention to the matter.
The KU Public Relations Student Society of America is an organization dedicated to educating its members about public relations and careers within the field. The club practices this by hosting professional speakers, visiting public relations, marketing, advertising agencies/firms, and more.
