Finding cool places to hang out with friends near Kutztown can be a bit of a hassle, and going to the same shops on Main Street every week gets tiring after a while. But there are a lot of other things to do if you venture outside of the campus borders. Here are five places off-campus to visit if you’re feeling tired of the same old things.

Snuzzle’s is a pizza shop located just 3.7 miles from Kutztown in Mertztown, Pa. They serve everything from pizza to sandwiches, and their steak rolls are delivered every day from Philadelphia, giving their cheesesteaks a Philly twist. They even have a whole sandwich menu of “customer creations,” which they have collected from various customers over the years. While they do not accept credit cards, they do provide an ATM in the shop. They also have a bar, but weekends can get hectic and you’ll need a designated driver, so plan accordingly.

Bower’s Hotel is a bar and grill located 4.4 miles away from Kutztown in Bower, Pa. They serve classic bar favorites as well as a collection of seafood. On Sundays, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., they serve a Sunday Brunch Buffet for all you can eat breakfast foods. Every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., they have an open mic night. They also have live entertainment throughout the year. Additionally, they provide lunch on Saturdays for those who are interested in taking a wine tour. Each night hosts a different kind of special, so you can pick the night that works best for you.

Crystal Cave is located just outside of Kutztown in Pennsylvania Dutch Country and is considered a very popular natural attraction. They provide 55-minute tours of the cave, which they give educational background for. They are closed for the months of December, January and February, but regardless of the weather, the cave stays around 54 degrees. They also have mini golfing when the weather permits. “It’s a really neat place,” says Amanda Jimenez, a junior at KU. “There are bats and the stalagmites are super cool to learn about.”

Saucony Creek Brewing Company is located in Kutztown, just a six-minute drive from the university. Not only do they provide beer and bar food, they also have brewery tours. They grow their own product and make both food and beer with whatever they have. Additionally, they have many different events that go on throughout the weeks, but their most consistent is Trivia Night on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. They also have Happy Hour on Tuesdays right before that, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. They currently have a patio section to their bar, so that you can sit outside with your beer instead of being crowded inside.

The Pinnacle is a hiking trail located 13.1 miles away from Kutztown. It is a part of the Appalachian Trail and it received its name because hikers stop at the peak of the trail to look over at all of the sights. You can spend hours hiking and taking in all of the nature, so bringing water is a must. Many students come to walk this trail, and it’s fair to assume you’ll bump into one if you’re hiking on a clear day. “It’s my favorite hiking trail,” says Keri Quigley, a senior at KU. “I hike a lot, but the Pinnacle is my favorite because the views are just so breathtaking.”
