COC offers student volunteer opportunities to give back to local communities

KU’s Community Outreach Center partnered with Opportunity House on Monday, Oct. 19, to prepare a meal for people in need in the Reading community.
Six KU volunteers helped prepare spaghetti, meatballs and dinner rolls for individuals served by Opportunity House, a local organization that supports people experiencing difficult circumstances. The event allowed students to contribute to the community through hands-on service.
The COC serves as a volunteer hub for KU students, connecting them with opportunities to earn service hours while giving back to the surrounding community.
“If students need service hours for activities, extracurriculars, sports, honor societies or whatever it may be, they can get their volunteer hours through us,” said Isabella Kistler, graduate assistant for the COC.

The center also provides students with practical experience while encouraging them to become more involved in their community.
“I enjoy interacting with the community of Reading and knowing that I had a positive impact on them,” KU volunteer Tabitha Glynn said.
The event was organized by Madeline Raub and Isabella Kistler, graduate assistants with the COC, alongside Nicole Marks, the center’s Hunger and Homelessness Coordinator.
The Community Outreach Center offers a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the semester. Upcoming events include the homecoming and Halloween cleanups.
The next Opportunity House event is scheduled for Nov. 30. Students can register through Engage to participate.
Students seeking service hours or interested in future volunteer opportunities can visit the COC in MSU Room 281 or visit their Instagram, @kutztown_coc, for more information.
