Golden Bears finish regular-season 18-0
By Tommy Scuderi
First-ranked KU field hockey closed out an 18-0 regular season on Nov. 1, defeating No. 2 Shippensburg 2-0 at Andre Reed Stadium.
KU seemed up to the challenge early, as just 6:55 into the opening quarter, freshman Julia Traynor swiped the ball from a Raider and fired it into the back of the cage to give KU a 1-0 lead. That score would hold until just 2:14 remained in the fourth quarter, when Julia’s sister, Jessica Traynor, redirected a lift from Ellie Myers off a penalty corner to pad KU’s lead at 2-0.
A defensive save from Olivia Kirkpatrick, along with several clutch stops from freshman goalkeeper Tess Adolf, kept Shippensburg off the board in the closing minutes to secure the win for the Golden Bears and send them into the PSAC tournament unbeaten.
“Finishing our season 18-0 is an incredible achievement. It is a testament to this group’s hard work, unselfish play and relentless determination,” KU Head Coach Marci Scheuing said. “We are so proud of this team finishing perfect in the regular season, but we are nowhere close to done and we have some very big goals to accomplish in the upcoming PSAC and NCAA tournaments.”
KU will host the PSAC semifinals on Friday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The winners will advance to the PSAC title game on Sunday, Nov. 9, at noon at Andre Reed Stadium.
