KU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts held annual Spring Celebration

KU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) held its annual Spring Celebration on Thursday, April 17, honoring students, faculty, staff and alumni for their achievements and service across departments.
The celebration took place at the Wells-Rapp Center for Mallet Percussion Research and included the presentation of Faculty Excellence Awards to Dr. Lisa Weckerle (Communication Studies) and Dr. Derrick Thompson (Music). Weckerle was recognized for her innovative media and performance pedagogy; Thompson for his trailblazing work as choral director and commitment to diversity and student engagement.

Marilyn Hardy, administrative assistant in the Music Department, received the Staff Excellence Award for her dedication, organization and student support.
Alumni Excellence honoree Daniel Moyer (Art & Design ’08) was praised for mentoring students through photography sessions that support professional portfolios.
Student Excellence Awards were given to Mal Dover, Kristina Bryan, Gabby Edwards, Alison Bender, Sarah Love, Sarah Olszewski and Natalie Reitzes for their academic achievements, leadership, and creative contributions.
Attendees described the event as inspiring and affirming. “It was cool being able to hear about other VPA students from different departments,” student Sarah Love said. “I don’t usually get to see what amazing things other students are doing across campus.”
