This spring semester, the Performing Dance Portmanteau embarks on its third annual spring showcase. The dancers will pay tribute to decades passed. Starting in the Roaring 20s with the flappers, all the way to the 1990s with Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Crosby, Stills, Nash Young and Bel Biv Devoe. The performance will honor songs like “Jessie’s Girl,” “Walking in Memphis” and “Time after Time.” PDP will show off its dance skills while showcasing history. There will be tap, hip-hop, lyrical, jazz and a Michael Jackson tribute dance. There will also be a 1950s sock hop tribute. Incorporated into each dance will be styles of dance from that decade.

Last year the team dedicated the show to a boy suffering from leukemia. They donated 20 percent of the proceeds to a boy named Colin. He was five years old at the time and had leukemia. Sadly he lost his battle to cancer during the summer of 2013. PDP members had grown close to Colin’s story and realized that pediatric cancer affects families everyday.

This year, PDP will be dedicating its performance to another cancer victim, Chase Kemberling, a four-year-old boy suffering from lymphoma, a blood cancer. He found out he is in remission on Jan. 16. Chase now has a chance to live a happy and full life, but his family still battles financial struggles from medical expenses.

Support Chase’s family at PDP’s Spring Showcase, “Time Machine” on May 4 at 2 p.m. in Schaffer Auditorium. The show is three dollars for KU students and five dollars for the general public.
