On Sept. 15, 16 and 18, KU Public Safety & Police Services held its Rape, Aggression, Defense (R.A.D.) training course in the Georgian Room of Old Main.

For over 20 years, Systems Courses have been offered for free to KU faculty, staff and students year-round. The R.A.D. course teaches self-defense concepts and techniques, going over various types of potential assault and how to defend against them.

“The ultimate goal is to escape,” Det. Cpl. Amanda George, R.A.D. coordinator, said. “It’s all about building their confidence and being aware of their surroundings.”

The R.A.D. course took place for three days and required 8 hours of mandatory training from participants. The first day of training was in a classroom setting where trainees went over a PowerPoint presentation and were joined by a guest speaker from Safe Berks–an organization that offers services to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The second day of training consisted of learning moves such as striking, kicking and bear hugs. These ground defense moves are taught for self-defense purposes, and proper gear and equipment are used to ensure safety.

The third and final day of training is optional but is a key part of the program. It is simulation day, which consists of three types of simulations plus one additional simulation of the trainee’s choice. This is where the participants can practice what they have learned and put it all together. Including the third day, R.A.D. becomes a 12-hour course.

“It’s a program that is realistic and teaching techniques and tactics could save someone’s life someday,” George said.

R.A.D. has its next session scheduled this semester on Nov. 3, 4 and 6, as well as in the spring semester on March 23, 24 and 26. If you are interested in signing up, you can register online or contact Danielle Santos at dsantos@kutztown.edu
