Chalk walk, movie night, thrift sale and more
By Alex Blasko
From a chalk walk to a thrift sale and even a movie night, KU’s Environmental Action Club (EAC) has planned a full slate of events for Earth Week in April. The club will host daily activities from April 20–24, according to plans discussed at a meeting in early March..
Club president Nick Rivera said the event has grown significantly over time.
“With this being my third year running this event and setting it into motion, I’ve gotten to see this celebration expand and evolve in ways that I’ve never expected,” Rivera said. “I am so proud of the e-board and how they’ve contributed to this event, and I feel that this will be the best Earth Day celebration that I have been a part of.”

The club’s mission is to create awareness and understanding of environmental issues while promoting a clean and healthy campus. The group regularly organizes cleanup efforts and encourages students to take part in maintaining their surroundings.
Below are KU’s EAC Earth Week events.
Chalk Walk
The week begins Monday, April 20, with a chalk walk. Participants will decorate campus with environmentally focused messages in preparation for the thrift sale later in the week.
Thrift Sale
The thrift sale will take place Tuesday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Schaeffer Building.
The club is accepting donations of adult clothing, shoes and accessories. Organizers ask that donors do not bring children’s clothing, underwear or non-clothing items.
Those who donate in advance by contacting the club’s executive board will receive vouchers redeemable for free clothing at the sale.
Movie Night
On Tuesday, EAC will host a movie night at 5 p.m. The movie will take place during the club’s normal meeting time in Boehm 260, and the film itself is yet to be determined. Those wishing to attend are not expected to bring anything, as Rivera asks that attendees “just show up and have fun.”
Campus Cleanup
On Wednesday, the club will host a campus cleanup following the thrift sale. Those wishing to attend and contribute should meet EAC at the bear statue on the north-side of campus. The cleanup starts at 5 p.m.
Table Event
A collaborative tabling event will be held Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. outside the McFarland Student Union.
Participating groups include the Environmental Action Club, Ornithology Club, Women in STEM, KU Environmental Advisory Commission, Marine Science Club and Outdoors Club. Each organization will offer activities, information and opportunities for engagement.
Scavenger Hunt
From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the MSU on Friday, the club will host a tree scavenger hunt based on different tree species around campus.
Participants will search for nine tree species across campus and submit photos as proof. Those who find at least three species will be entered into a raffle, with additional entries awarded to those who locate all nine.
