Student journalists engage in field training exercises in Harrisburg

On Thursday, April 24, The Keystone Newspaper staff visited The State Museum of Pennsylvania, where they practiced reporting techniques as part of a field training exercise.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania features four floors of Pa history, beginning with prehistoric times and spanning to modern day. Exhibits include a nature lab, industry and transportation, dinosaurs and civil rights. The State Museum of Pennsylvania was established in 1905 and moved to its present building in 1964.
Editor-in-chief Kaitlyn Resline was particularly fond of a civil rights exhibit which spotlighted a couple that desegregated Levittown. “I liked learning about how they moved to York later in life,” Resline said. “That was really interesting because that’s where I’m from. It was like my personal hometown connection to the civil rights movement.”
This exhibit is part of the A Place for All: Three Stories of Integration in PA exhibition, which tells the history of three integration efforts in Pennsylvania after World War II.
Managing editor Bethany McDonald identified the Pennsylvania Icons as her favorite exhibit. The Pennsylvania Icons collection features 350+ items, focusing on how Pennsylvania has influenced the nation’s development through its people, places, products and events. “It was neat to see how many people from my home state impacted society,” McDonald said.
The museum is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays and 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.
