On Tuesday, April 1, KU hosted its 2025 annual Dean’s Scholars’ Reception, an event dedicated to recognizing the academic achievements, leadership, and engagement of outstanding students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). The evening, hosted in the Georgian Room of Old Main, was marked by a sense of celebration and community, with live classical music and a catering service. A particularly special moment occurred when attendees joined together to sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Lisa Frye, celebrating both her milestone and her contributions to the university.

A highlight of the reception was the recognition of the Syed R. Ali-Zaidi Award for Academic Excellence honorable mentions. This prestigious honor acknowledges graduating seniors who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, leadership, and involvement beyond the classroom. The award seeks to recognize individuals who have excelled in their respective fields of study, earned the admiration of faculty, actively participated in extracurricular activities, and conveyed their achievements through compelling personal essays.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences nominated four exemplary students for this honor, each submitting a portfolio for review. Following a rigorous selection process, Aidan La Penta was chosen as KU’s finalist. However, the Dean’s Office was deeply impressed by all the nominees. Their exceptional academic records, extensive participation in research, publications, internships, and leadership roles were commendable. What truly set them apart was the consistent praise from faculty regarding their genuine altruism and compassion. In light of this, the university decided to celebrate all the nominees by sharing excerpts from faculty letters of recommendation.

Megan Hughes, a public relations major with a minor in professional writing, was praised by Dr. Robert Fauci for her leadership in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). He described witnessing her provide mentorship and a welcoming environment during a fellow student’s Honors capstone project. Her ability to foster community within PRSSA exemplifies the leadership principles taught in the classroom. Dr. Fauci praised her as an exceptional candidate for the award, recognizing her intelligence, leadership, and emotional skill. Hughes was invited to receive a certificate in recognition of her outstanding achievements.

Jessica Southgate-Sands, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in German Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Arts in German Communication and Culture, was commended by Dr. Lynn Kutch for her instrumental role in organizing the Spark for German program, a national initiative supported by the Goethe-Institut aimed at increasing awareness and interest in learning German as a foreign language.  Southgate-Sands spearheaded investment plans, scheduling, and supply procurement for the program, ensuring its success in two elementary schools within the Kutztown School District. Dr. Kutch praised her organization, enthusiasm, and leadership, calling her an irreplaceable asset to the university.

Jack Schembri, a student working towards a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a minor in professional writing, and a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was recognized by Dr. Colleen Clemens for his remarkable academic and personal contributions. Dr. Clemens referred to him as “a national treasure,” highlighting his enthusiasm, kindness, and intellectual rigor. She noted that his work surpasses the undergraduate level and that his impact on campus extends beyond academics.

The reception also celebrated the recipient of the CLAS Dean’s Outstanding Faculty Award, which recognizes tenure-track and tenured faculty who demonstrate a sustained commitment to student success inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members are evaluated on their dedication to student mentorship, research guidance, and contributions beyond the expected teaching responsibilities. This year’s recipient was Dr. Carol Mapes from the Department of Biology, whose unwavering commitment to student success and academic excellence has had a profound impact on the KU community.

The Dean’s Scholars’ Reception remains one of the most anticipated events of the academic year, serving as a platform to celebrate the dedication, curiosity, and excellence of both students and faculty. Dr. Laurie McMillan, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, extended heartfelt congratulations to all honorees, acknowledging their remarkable contributions to the KU community. A special thank you was extended to project managers Christopher Cohen and Lisbeth Cabrera for their invaluable contributions in making this celebration a success. KU invites the community to reflect on and appreciate the inspiring accomplishments of these students and faculty members.
