Making it onto the dean’s list is an accomplishment that can prove to future employers that you have a strong work ethic. It is also something that can help you prove to yourself that hard work does pay off. But how do you make  it onto the list? After speaking to several students who made it onto the dean’s list, I can provide some answers.

“It means sometimes studying instead of spending time with friends or watching Netflix. It means taking breaks while studying in order to pace yourself. It also means looking at the bigger picture of what you learn. Most of all, it takes a desire to learn and a desire to succeed,” says Andrea Heydt. As a college student, staying in bed all day binge watching your favorite TV shows is always tempting because we have the freedom to do it. Self-motivation and discipline are necessary for success.

The dean’s list requirement is a 3.6 GPA. Research has consistently shown that the single most important factor in predicting a student’s GPA is how often the student attends their classes. “I try to go to every class. I never skip for no reason,” said Jayaruwan Gunathilake, a senior chemistry major.

The students also agreed that studying needs to be enjoyable. “It helps me to understand concepts rather than just memorizing. I was a terrible student in high school. I knew what I wanted to do, but high school was too boring,” said Gunathilake.

“Make sure you study something you’re really passionate about, so that the work is enjoyable, even when it’s tough,” said Christina Davies, a junior communication design major. “I’m lucky that I knew from a young age what I wanted to do with my life, so even on the days where I literally don’t get sleep, or when a project seems to overtake my life, I’m fine with it, because it’s what I love to do.”

“Also, it doesn’t matter if there are 10 or 200 people in your class, you need to have a good relationship with your professor. It’s the little things that count; say hi to them around campus and show them that you’re trying in class,” said Gunathilake.

“You have to have the drive and motivation to accomplish the goals you set out for yourself,” said Jamie Mullen. So set a goal, study hard, go to class and you could see your name on the dean’s list.
