KU’s Student Government Board and the Association of Campus Events have organized an on-campus concert for Oct. 18, 2014. Hip-hop recording artist, Chance The Rapper, will take the stage in Schaeffer Auditorium during KU’s Homecoming weekend.

“It fits so perfectly,” said SGB President Joe Scoboria. “The football game starts the day off and then there will be a ‘day party’ event on the DMZ with music, games and food.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Tickets can be purchased at the MSU information desk for $20 for KU students with a student ID. Non-student tickets are scheduled to go on sale Oct. 1 for $40. Tickets are limited to the seating available in Schaeffer Auditorium, meaning there were approximately 1,000 tickets available. As of Sept. 15, less than 100 tickets remain for purchase.

On the morning of ticket sales, KU senior Mike LaFrance woke up early to get in line. “I got here at 6:45 a.m. and stayed up all night,” said LaFrance.

Ticket sales began at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Around 8:30 a.m. LaFrance said the line went from the information desk through the Bear’s Den. LaFrance was tenth in line.

The concert is sponsored by SGB and ACE. In the spring, SGB formed a concert committee of KU students including Scoboria, Letecia Garcia, Tyler Wuensche and Matt Assad. Over the summer, they worked with the Association of Campus Events, KU’s Vice President of Enrollment Management, Kimberly Scranage, and Leah Cassellia from the Office of Student Involvement.

Other state schools such as Bloomsburg, Clarion and IUP are able to host concerts more frequently for their students because they have an entire office dedicated to solely organizing concert events.

“This is a good first step for KU,” said Scoboria. “I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Precautions to enter the event include metal detectors and security pat-downs upon entry. SGB will be looking for ways to measure the success of the concert by students’ remarks on social media sites.

“I’ve heard he’s very good to see live,” said Scoboria.

Chance The Rapper recently tweeted a picture of his fall concert schedule. Other schools he will be performing at include: St. Louis University, Eastern Michigan University, Rutgers University, University of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, University of Rhode Island and West Virginia University.
